tl;dr is that the #EU is moving forward with a plan to build a satellite-based internet solution, in the style of #Starlink. In principle this is a great way to democratise internet access across the continent. In reality, I'm sceptical to say the least—not in the technology per se, but in the Union's capacity to actually make it happen. :/

I point to #WiFi4EU as prior art on the matter, which was supposed to blanket public spaces across Europe in free wi-fi in 2018. In 2024, coverage is spotty and functionality is inconsistent. (Yes, I know, urban & terrestrial networking is a whole thing, so don't come at me.) But we're talking about the same fundamental thing here: a massive, pan-Union, public benefit infrastructure project. But this time, IT'S IN SPACE.
