All these companies out here with job listings for "senior developer" and "staff engineer", are the same companies that are busy trying to replace juniors and mids with LLMs.
Where do you think the seniors and staffs are coming from, my dudes?

And, because @cyd is #OpenSource, I also just opened up a pull request to fix a small thing. Yay, computers

Note to self: write about that time I started an internet radio station in the late 90s. It was the wild west, y'all. You could do anything (as long as it worked on a 56k modem, haha)

I've got @cyd churning away, backing up my Twitter archive starting from day 1, back in 2009.
I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do with the account yet, but it seems like a good idea to grab the archive.
Unfortunately, deleting (almost) everything, squatting the username, and moving on seems like the path forward.
The #fediverse isn't a wholesale replacement, but it feels the most home-shaped, for now. Despite the exodus of normies to #bluesky, that platform makes my capitalism radar ping, so idk.
Predictably, because I'm old, I'm feeling nostalgic for forums and, like, #MySpace or something I guess. Actually, tbqh I never had a myspace account, but the vibes from that era were solid. Hand-writing HTML, serving it from URLs with tildes in the path…
Webrings! Remember webrings? Ah, what a time to have been alive haha

Ma chère Free.fr, vous pensez peut-être que cela est mignon, mais finalement il est assez vulgaire. Chez nous c'est mal poli même si, pour vous, c'est rigolo.

Taking in some live #NHL whilst in Winnipeg. It is much warmer on the ice than it is outside.
[#]Jets are down 0-2 to the #Flames but there's still a full period to play.

I point to #WiFi4EU as prior art on the matter, which was supposed to blanket public spaces across Europe in free wi-fi in 2018. In 2024, coverage is spotty and functionality is inconsistent. (Yes, I know, urban & terrestrial networking is a whole thing, so don't come at me.) But we're talking about the same fundamental thing here: a massive, pan-Union, public benefit infrastructure project. But this time, IT'S IN SPACE.

tl;dr is that the #EU is moving forward with a plan to build a satellite-based internet solution, in the style of #Starlink. In principle this is a great way to democratise internet access across the continent. In reality, I'm sceptical to say the least—not in the technology per se, but in the Union's capacity to actually make it happen. :/

Absolutely fascinating report by Pew. "Exploring views about international engagement, travel and closeness to others around the globe"
No surprise that international travel is closely correlated with income level (for example), but there are some very interesting insights into political leanings and age groups as well. Big disparities even with the EU which I wasn't expecting.

What is a #tar file?
https://depot.dev/blog/what-is-a-tar-file
« What the heck is a tar file? Since the 1980s, tar has been the go-to method for bundling and archiving multiple files, simplifying the transfer and storage of file collections on magnetic tape.
But, what exactly is a tar file, and how did a magnetic tape utility become the standard for archiving files even 40 years later? »
A fun and interesting look into the tar—and #gzip of course—file formats.

Looking for suggestions for "learn to touch type" software that can deal with hands that don't have five digits on them. Does such a thing exist, at all?
(e.g. for somebody who is missing a finger—or just can't use their pinkies or something.)
plz RT for reach :neocat_sign_thx:

Because I make changes on the wrong branch all the friggen time in #git, here is a reminder for everybody—including myself—that git stash is a thing that exists.
(wrong_branch)$ git stash
(wrong_branch)$ git checkout <correct_branch>
(correct_branch)$ git stash apply
Also, h/t k88hudson et al. for the always-useful git flight rules: https://github.com/k88hudson/git-flight-rules?tab=readme-ov-file#i-made-changes-on-the-wrong-branch
