Playing with my new #OM #TG7 camera. Trying to find a good durable weather resistant travel/ #hiking camera. Really disappointed many cameras don't have built-in GPS tagging anymore. I don't want to have to be tied to my phone in any way, I don't want to deal with post processing and matching up timestamps.
The TG-7 seems to ticks those boxes, but at the cost of a relatively small sensor and some other questionable specs. Though I do appreciate it's ruggedness, supposed to survive 7' drops? Sure!
Not 100% sold on it yet, probably going to return it just on the lack of manual controls alone. A couple of photos in and around #astoria #nyc this evening. I do appreciate the macro mode, captures some good details.
If anyone has any good #travel #compact #cameras recommendations please give me a shout! Also looking at the #Ricoh #GR3 as another possible option.

Brought the OM #TG7 out #hiking today.
Still pretty whelmed. It does a very passable job on the macro side of things. I really feel like the sensor size is holding it back on the harder lighting conditions. It really misses the depth and detail.
Dealing with the goofy buried menus to get the various settings is cumbersome, especially in chilly weather. Really do miss the more manual controls and the simplicity they offer.
Really impressed with the stability and speed of the GPS acquisition though. I didn't even have to think about it. Huge plus for me.
Still on the fence.

Also, finally #NeedleIce season! Always so amazed at the little icicle formations.

@nebriv Even if it's not the perfect camera, it might still be good for social media and documenting hikes. But would you have to carry a separate high-pixel camera for the "money shots"? If so, then maybe keep looking.
I find myself downsizing all my pictures. I've only had one person ever ask for a high-resolution version of one of my pics. Having GPS and an accurate timestamp is turning out to be the most useful feature for me.

@ericphelps good point for sure! There's a huge factor in just being able to have a bit of a bang around camera I can just toss in my hip pocket. No worrying about lenses, bags, batteries (usb-c charging!? Amazing) or anything.

@ericphelps Sooooo I bit the bullet and swapped this out for the Sony RX100 VII. I'm very happy I did.
Much more manual control but still crazy compact. GPS tagging via the phone app (🤢) works surprisingly well... for now at least.
But I'm much more happy having something to fight against a bit and force me to learn!

@nebriv I could GPS tag my "real camera" photos too… If only I remembered to set the clock on the camera before I headed out.
So how's that work for you? Does the camera use a full-time Bluetooth connection to your phone to get GPS, or do you process your pictures after your outing?

@ericphelps yeah the phone app just Bluetooths to the camera in the background and then the camera applies the GPS in the exif normally.
Tagging via GPX track and timestamp is my backup plan if that app functionality ever becomes fubar 😅
I've used exiftool before to do it! It honestly works great, just moving parts and all that...

@nebriv Exiftool? It's been so long. I recall some program I could feed a GPS track and a folder of photos and let it match them up. You, ummm, wouldn't happen to know if exiftool can do that… Or if I have to write a script to help things along?

@ericphelps yeah exactly exiftool will do just that, feed it the GPX and it'll take the closest timestamp from the log and match it up to each photo.
