still a little bit disappointed with the change to kde plasma's default icons
my mind doesn't really process the new monochrome ones, so each time i open the application launcher, instead of a quick glance to immediately end up where i need, i now have to spend several seconds just reading the individual labels
i know they're customizable but it feels less fun and less accessible by default

@keeri You might want to look at https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-desktop/-/issues/142

@MageInBlack psychic damage seeing tech people look away from affected groups to decide whether something is accessible solely from own theoretical knowledge

@keeri and yet the fact that the issue was raised at all means devs aren't blind to the people. Yes they are not able to understand some things due to lack of experience in the field. However some are able to listen.
The fact the issue was raised at all means they saw people speaking about it and thought if they made the right decision.
You should understand that they do not have the same experience. But they are willing to listen.

@keeri dunno if it is a good idea but @aks
Couldn't find Nate who is dealing with the issue. But yeah accessibility reasons, and in particular, recognizability and also the time to click might suffer due to icons lacking color and being simple in form. Iirc icons being very different in form and color at the same time help with memorization and time to recognize, just form or just color won't work.
Also just coloring symbolic is a bad compromise due to the same reduction in color or form

@keeri @aks I understand the concern about making the desktop uniform looking, however sometimes it comes at a cost. In this case it seems to hurt time to click due to simplification of icons and people having hard time to recognize them now, which leads to frustration. And, in a sense, it hurts accessibility.

@MageInBlack @keeri
hi, i actually liked the colored ones more too. easier to "visually grep"
its being discussed! personally i believe the solution is having symbolic icons that have colors in them, like i mentioned in the issue linked above.
edit: thanks for reminding me of this btw, threw more of my opinions in the issue

@aks @keeri I would argue that this compromise has some issues too in a way it was presented. coloring insides with white borders looks just odd. If you want to color code it you color them WHOLE (or in different shades of the same color), as it is much easier to understand, as well as providing just one color to grasp
This would provide simplicity, different shape, and color coding them at the same time with colors that are easy to see. Color blind people can distinguish by different shapes...

@aks @keeri I will try and color them and see what I can get out of it in krita/GIMP. I will attach a post with pictures in some time

@MageInBlack @keeri that would be appreciated! Definitely share your ideas and findings in the issue thread!

@aks @keeri Mmm, I am no good at coloring tbh. The general idea is:
Picking a color for an icon that represents a category (preferably commonly agreed upon)
Filling an icon and distinguishing details if need be, the sum color should be around the associated color
Tbh not every icon works, that is why I replaced bookmark with a star for favorites, cause bookmark is red and I wanted to color the utilities toolbox as red too, but there are many cases. That is one of the issues picking a color 1/3

@MageInBlack @keeri that would work as well. I am no designer so i do not know surefire solution, but having colored symbolic icons would be better than monochrome ones. How theyre colored i leave to designers :)
