Remember how the LRT trillium line was going to service the airport? If I am not mistaken, the federal government tossed in extra money to make it happen because we all know this is because this is now the city government works.
However, all we could get was this stupid spur so that it would be three trains to get downtown instead of two.
This spur became line 4 and will be launching in a couple of weeks with an added stop at the EY event center (I suppose the EY event center hosts large events some days and a train would be useful).
I wonder if the brain trust at the OC checked to see if the airport is open on the weekend in January? I am thinking it is. I am also thinking that maybe residents might start and end their vacations on the weekend with a flight into and out of YOW because they work during the week.
It is almost like the entire point of line 4 was forgotten about in this phased rollout. Yet somehow, council seems okay with ignoring the airport and the EY center if it is the weekend.
It is so stupid, it is embarrassing.

@human3500 It's just a phased in opening for training (for employees and public) etc. We all know the disaster that was for the first opening. Doors jamming etc. People with luggage is going to be something they'll have to figure out. I think soft openings are good. New trains are going to have new quirks.

@mariellequinton I think it is actually opening for revenue / service - at least, that is what I am hearing from the city. You think it is still just training. One of us is wrong.
And, if this train shows up at the airport, people will get on it with baggage - soft launch or not. There will be a suitcase on the train on day 1.
Like I said, this launch is being botched.

@human3500 Hmm. I thought they were using the new diesel trains on the spur to the airport but they seem to be reusing the old ones. Which didn't seem very luggage friendly to me, but maybe they've reconfigured them a bit? So... now they have three different trains? And two of them are nonsensically diesel. Why didn't they just build the spur electric if they weren't using the same diesel trains as the rest of the line. This city is dumb.

@mariellequinton Now you're coming around to my position.
"Can we save 50 cents today by doing something dumb?"

@human3500 The diesel is just dumb. It's not going to save any money because in ten years we'll have to switch to electric anyway. Yes, we avoided buying those stupid alstrom trains again but we could've chosen a better electric train instead.

@mariellequinton We closed line 2 for two years and didn't electrify it. There's no good explanation for that.
Instead we laid down all kinds of new rail which requires diesel.
I assume we did this because we're too cheap to put a new tunnel under dows lake and the Arboretum.

@human3500 I have no idea what their thinking was. When the plan first came out, I figured it was just temporary to get it passed and that they'd revise to electric before the building/buying started. I'm not sure how much they've screwed things up by choosing diesel, but the good news is there's lots of progress on battery electric trains that do quick charging during the 2 minute station stops. So maybe we do that instead of overhead wires?

@human3500 Like this one that got put in because the overhead wires through tunnels was prohibitively expensive https://youtu.be/sARTvQj5jIg?si=gKAow_TUuKqJvbBG
