Remember how the LRT trillium line was going to service the airport? If I am not mistaken, the federal government tossed in extra money to make it happen because we all know this is because this is now the city government works.

However, all we could get was this stupid spur so that it would be three trains to get downtown instead of two.

This spur became line 4 and will be launching in a couple of weeks with an added stop at the EY event center (I suppose the EY event center hosts large events some days and a train would be useful).

I wonder if the brain trust at the OC checked to see if the airport is open on the weekend in January? I am thinking it is. I am also thinking that maybe residents might start and end their vacations on the weekend with a flight into and out of YOW because they work during the week.

It is almost like the entire point of line 4 was forgotten about in this phased rollout. Yet somehow, council seems okay with ignoring the airport and the EY center if it is the weekend.

It is so stupid, it is embarrassing.

@human3500 It's just a phased in opening for training (for employees and public) etc. We all know the disaster that was for the first opening. Doors jamming etc. People with luggage is going to be something they'll have to figure out. I think soft openings are good. New trains are going to have new quirks.

@mariellequinton I think it is actually opening for revenue / service - at least, that is what I am hearing from the city. You think it is still just training. One of us is wrong.

And, if this train shows up at the airport, people will get on it with baggage - soft launch or not. There will be a suitcase on the train on day 1.

Like I said, this launch is being botched.

@human3500 No, it's opening for the public. Just a soft opening. You can't finish training until you have the public actually using it. They will identify problems and test fixes. Much of the training will be for the public as they learn the new trains. The employees will then have to learn how the public actually uses the trains and not just how they assume the public will.

@human3500 I presume the people using the airport during the week are slightly different than the people on weekends. More likely to have experienced business travellers with less baggage during the week. Families and vacationers with lots of baggage on the weekend. One presumes they consulted with airport about this. I think the first opening was so botched they are taking it very conservatively this time.

@mariellequinton I think you've over thought this - there's no way the oc puts that amount of planning and consideration into anything.

And if they really wanted a soft opening, launch it right after Christmas when many are not working and no one is at Carleton.

This run it 5 days a week is hard to understand. They will gain zero insight into weekend traffic patterns.

@human3500 Phase 1 is 5 days a week for at least 2 weeks. Phase 2 adds Saturday and goes for at least 2 weeks as well. Phase 3 is 7 days a week. This seems like the right approach to me. Even Montreal messed up their new line opening, so this approach is a good idea.

@human3500 Also, keep in mind we have a new head of OC Transpo this time. She might actually know what she's doing, unlike the previous head. The last one just did whatever the mayor said.

@mariellequinton I had hopes for her but I've seen no evidence that she's competent. She couldn't even answer a basic question like "what is happening to improve reliability".

During her tenure, the entire system is collapsing and she wouldn't call out the mayor for creating the under funding disaster when he intentionally cut the funding for the OC. She should have tendered her resignation when he cut the budget. Why she wants this legacy is beyond me.

@human3500 Right. I'm not sure how much is her fault and not just the stupid way the city budgets OC Transpo and fixing the mess created before her, but a new line opening is definitely something she should know how to do. I'm going to judge her based on how this goes.
