Don't you dare call yourself a hacker if you're not chatting on IRC with WeeChat in Termux over Tor, all running on your phone.

@gumnos whatever floats your boat, unless your boat floats on Discord or WhatsApp, then we have nothing to talk about

@Reiddragon what's magnificent about standard chat protocols like IRC is that we can each use whatever client(s) we like and still be able to chat.
Agreed re. Discord/WhattsApp. I lived through the proprietary-chat-app wars and have no desire to re-experience them.

@gumnos Remember the IM days when we had to have something like Trillian or Pidgin to be able to talk on all of them, and the IM protocols weren't even compatible with one another. @Reiddragon

@claudiom
Very much so. The IRC client, the ICQ client, the XMPP/Google{Talk/Chat/whatever} client, the MS whatever they did, the AOL/AIM client, and likely a bunch more I'm forgetting/ignoring. Pidgin brought some wonderful sanity to the chaos.
Eventually I came to largely refuse anything other than IRC & XMPP (still have to suffer MS Teams at $DAYJOB though, but that's on their VM to manage).

@gumnos Heh! Same here! :flan_XD:
I do use IRC extensively and I'm even on SDF COM. I have an XMPP account, but I rarely use it because no one is on for me to chat with. :flan_shrug: That said, I've been thinking about creating a Matrix account on the @hpr Matrix server. :flan_hacker:

@claudiom @gumnos @hpr Matrix basically wants to be XMPP but then fails horribly at it, it didn’t even get the encryption working properly with a single kind of encryption, then on XMPP all clients support both OMEMO and PGP and it works great

@Reiddragon See, this is why I chose XMPP over Matrix when I was looking to create an account for chatting. It's also supposedly less overheard to run a XMPP server than it is to run a Matrix server. Not sure if that has changed for the better in Matrix. @hpr @gumnos

@gumnos @claudiom I’d rather have the chaos of 10 protocols than the absolute torture that is Teams, tbh
