Hello academics of Mastodon, I have a question for y'all: how much do you pay your undergraduate researchers?

I want to pay the undergraduate researchers I work with a fair wage for the work they do, but I haven't worked with undergrads before, and there aren't a lot of examples of researchers paying undergrads for their work. I'm currently thinking I'd pay an hourly wage somewhere between $25-30/hr for 10 hrs of work per week over the course of the semester, plus some form of overtime the week before the paper deadline. What do people think?

I'm meeting with my advisors soon, and I want to have some sample numbers to bring to them so we can all discuss whether we have funds for these positions already or whether we need to apply for more funding.

@pci_express at UCSC (where I’ve only seen one case of this) this was the standard university pay for tutor/grader ($21/hr in 2017) and a limit of 10 hours a week (above which you need to provide other benefits)

@dev ooh yeah going based off what the tutors get paid is probably a good starting point!

And yeah I definitely don't think this position will be over 10 hrs, especially for first time/early on undergrad researchers. It's really hard for undergrads to get much time to work on research anyways (imo) especially due to other school work/life/other jobs/etc.

@pci_express @dev If you want the current numbers, as of 2024, UCSC pays undergrads $27.42/hour for group tutoring and $21.28/hour for individual tutoring.

@lindsey @pci_express ah, right, I believe the $21/hr number was in 2022, it was $18/hr in 2017. And you might want to be careful with the overtime part due to regulation (need to provide overtime pay and other benefits), I believe UCSC solves this by approving a limit of hours (say 100) for the entire quarter, and then some weeks can have more work and others can be without work.

@dev @pci_express My other answer to the question is "as much as the funding agency will give you for it". NSF (specifically CISE) will give you $10k/student/year through an REU supplement. That's how I funded my undergrad collaborator for our zine project, for example.

@lindsey @dev ah that's very helpful! NSF grants would be the first place I'd personally look

@pci_express this is an interesting question… I don’t think I’ve ever been in a situation where I had to decide on pay for undergrads, there was always a university or department standard wage.

(And my data points are probably way too old to be useful…)
