I had a physics class in college where during the first lab the professor had to run around answering questions because every group was confused about how the oscilloscopes work despite having instructions. He stopped the class at one point and said “look, you’re not going to break them by playing with the knobs. You need to be willing to mess around and figure it out yourself”. That has very much stuck with me.
