Sometimes I like to process sound through #eurorack and #modular and #semimodular gear.

Correction. Anytime at all is a good time to be processing sound through #eurorack and #modular and #semimodular gear.

There. That's better.

@composergreg @synthdiy and is that the Korg version of the Arp 2600? How are you liking that?

I've had the Behringer (I know, say what you want, ha) for a couple of years and just could not get into it.

@stevenray @synthdiy

Yup. It's the Korg Arp. I had the Behringer as well and they are not at all the same instrument. Of course in function they are similar, but the sound of the Korg 2600 is in different league.

I never saw or heard such a huge difference between them when listening to web demos but trust me... in person and in the mix, the Korg is incredible.

@stevenray @synthdiy

I also own the Behringer CAT... and while I love the unique architecture and functionality of it, I can't shake the feeling that the osc and filter circuits are putting out a sound that's EERILY close to the Behringer Arp clone.

Is it possible they're using the same (or very similar) chips for many of their analog boxes?

@composergreg @synthdiy yeah, I would guess so.

Thanks for the mini review. I'll have to see if I can hear the Korg in person somewhere.

Being that it's 3x more expensive & given my experience with the Behringer (which has more to do with architecture than sound), I probably wouldn't upgrade. I have enough other sound-producing things to keep me occupied.

I have the Neutron, which these days I mainly use for it's sumptuous patch bay. It's VCOs & filters have been useful at times, as I don't mind their sound at all. I have 3 eurorack skiffs at this point, but the Neutron still gets used for it's utility.

@stevenray @synthdiy

That makes total sense. If the architecture didn't speak to you, it's definitely not worth the upgrade.

I'll post some non-YT uncompressed samples of it's sound soon. It really screams and thumps ... which now that I say it out loud kinda sounds creepy, but I'm sure you know what I mean!

@composergreg @synthdiy HA, I do. My Serge eurorack stuff could be described that way at times.

Thanks a bunch for the info. I'll keep an eye out for those sounds!

Also, I've always kinda lusted after the Neutron and now I'm really interested in the Proton. Are you thinking of adding that to your studio spaceship?

@composergreg @synthdiy boy at I hadn't even heard of it. I'll have to go take a look & listen.

Though at the moment I'm more into adding hardware outboard gear like EQs and compressors, as well as acoustic panels. Those things were ignored for long enough. 🙂

@composergreg @stevenray @synthdiy on my end they dont sound the same, the arp and cat clone. I use both of them regularly. Unless i am doing like a basic square wave no filter or something simple like that. I mean, at that point even my lab function generator sounds the same and look the same on the scope.

On the neutron, i’ve had one since they came out and it is amazing. It is only missing a ring modulator to make it complete, imho.

@f_dion @stevenray @synthdiy

Outside of the clear signal path and architecture differences, I hear a vague similarity between them that I don't hear in other gear. Even between two new-ish Moogs like the Subsequent 37 and Matriarch, for example.

I haven't rigorously tested this, but it's a feeling I can't shake. Could it be placebo?

@composergreg @stevenray @synthdiy good question... I just use them for very different things, I've not spent time trying to replicate the same sounds. And I rarely, if ever, use the plain output of a synth. Always through overdrive or chorus or phaser or reverb etc. Do you have the arp 2600 with spring reverb?

@composergreg @stevenray @synthdiy so just add a bit of spring reverb, that way they'll never sound the same 😁

HA! Or... perhaps I'll sell the Meanie and use the Korg Arp. :awesome:

@composergreg @stevenray @synthdiy I was playing with the barp 2600 and the (copy)cat early this morning, and golly, it is not easy to accidentally or purposefully get to similar sounds on them. I think due to where I'm comfortable in the sounds I make with each, they are so far apart... but that is a cool exercise and I will have to continue this later when I have some time.

Might have to bring the Kobol in the mix too
