Major artists that have a wide-ranging impact on other artists is not surprising. By definition it's 'the norm'. But what REALLY interests me is why some people are relatively unaffected by them.

Even better... when minor/fringe artists have an outsized impact. What does that say about their artistic compass?

Are they suffering some form of declination? Or are they more likely to be innovators?
