Here I am a white woman with all the privileges that title implies.
And yet my origins are no different than anyone trying to immigrate here.
My great great grandmother was an indentured servant who left Ireland because her father was involved in a scandal whereas he owed money to the wrong people for the wrong reasons. She took employment as a scullery maid in Hartford at the age of 14. The only difference between her and anyone immigrating here now is one thing.

My great great grandmother could pass in the streets. She had white skin , red hair, and blue eyes so if she was dressed for her every other Sunday off no one would know what her origins were. She. Could. Pass.
That right there is the essence of racism. When a person who emptied chamber pots and scrubbed dishes could walk the streets unbothered because they were the ‘right’ color. After her contract was up she could marry amd have children who were free citizens.
