The future is not e-cars, but e-bikes. The former double down on an unsustainable development style for our cities and come with all the current negative externalities we already have. The later fundamentally change what a city can be. It will happen, and it will happen faster than most people think.

@ekuber and (e)-public transport.

@sgued double the number of busses on the road, and travel times decrease. Double the number of cars on the road and you end up with gridlock.

@ekuber why hasn’t it already?

@chrisamaphone changes happens slowly at first, and then all at once. Adoption is happening organically, I'm seeing more and more cargo bikes all over town. Those people are trail blazers, and future advocates. They will help push for infrastructure changes that help other people feel comfortable riding. And somewhere in that process you hit critical mass: enough people use/enjoy/demand the public space that they will get catered to. Until then you have to contend with pushback at every level.

@ekuber I sure hope you’re right. The perverse incentive is that cars, which cost as much as a small house and become worthless in 10 years, are a MASSIVE industry. This creates “employment” for millions, and this ridiculous cycle of spending, production, road network matinenance, etc. creates “output” in this thing called GDP. Which btw goes UP if you blow up a bridge and rebuild it.

@ianthetechie well we should tell politicians that gdp goes up if they pay people to dig holes and then to cover them up too, instead of the bridge example. they might take these serious.

@nicemicro this is also true. And they don’t care. They love being judged by vanity metrics. It’s the citizens that need to care.

@ekuber I wish That'd work out in rural areas because I hate fixing my car, but I sure don't think I'll ride an e-bike to work in January that's 45 miles away.

@chriscochrun I said cities

@ekuber right, that's why I said I wish it would work because I hate fixing my car. Mostly, just wish I could live much closer to my work.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from chriscochrun@mastodon.online
@chriscochrun I'm sorry. It's very common for people that do not live in cities and dislike bikes for some reason to come off strong and I confused your comment with that.

@ekuber no worries! I love biking a lot and go for some off road biking plenty, but yes my work kinda requires the long commutes. But what do you do? 🤷♂️ at least I have time to listen to great podcasts or audio books!
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from chriscochrun@mastodon.online
@chriscochrun this is one of the reasons I'm very much in favor of increased density in cities. With more plentiful affordable housing, more people can have a car free lifestyle. And "remote" places can be closer to cities as well.

@ekuber As an old guy in a house full of disabled folks I'm holding out for e-trikes
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from fishidwardrobe@mastodon.me.uk
@fishidwardrobe apparently there are several brands making e-trikes already, at least in the US market. I hope they catch on!
