Wow... just sat as a volunteer examiner for a fully online #HamRadio test exam. The applicant was 100% #blind and using the JAWS #ScreenReader. It was amazing to watch (and hear the screen reader) as he navigated the test. He passed! Wonderful to have a new ham :) Hope to hear him on the air soon.

@gocu54 Nick, yes, the test is taken online and the webpage is accessible for those with screen readers. All ham radio tests in the USA are given by volunteer examiners. These sessions that GLAARG holds are conducted via zoom where (usually) 4 volunteers observe one applicant. This applicant took training ahead of the test provided by the free “Making Operating Radio Easier” project. Their page has a lot of detail on what they offer. http://n2re.org/m-o-r-e-project

@kb9ens Question, do people pay to take the test? or does it come with this training program? My brothers @rook and @LeonianUniverse might want to get in on this as they've expressed interest in ham radios.

@gocu54 @LeonianUniverse the answer is “it depends”. There are 14 different Volunteer Exam Coordinator organizations. Most charge a nominal fee around $14. Laurel ARC is one that does not charge a fee. Most waive the fee for minors and I think the MORE program does pay some fees though I don’t know the details. Hamstudy.org/sessions has a filterable list of upcoming test events and the fee. Once someone passes they do have to pay the FCC $35 to get the license (which is good for 10 years).
