I never know what to feel about synthwave passing itself off as an 80s aesthetic. It’s definitely inspired by the 80s, but that’s not the full story - it’s a very specific subset of 80s musical genre and popular culture, taken out of wider sociopolitical context, and merged with modern genre, production and sociocultural norms to make something new!
