@miramarmike @Mer__edith @signalapp The high infrastructure cost that they bear are the consequence of choosing a centralised service. There's really no way to make a centralised design scale without scaling the costs along with it.

A decentralised design lets individual operators handle portions of the cost. Lots of folk and communities have some spare compute capacity in their own servers, and the cost for hosting a few users is near-zero in cases like this.
