what are the technical issues with changing your AP implementation?
GTS has a big warning about it. Why?

@owls The problem has to do with different signature keys.
Basically: In AP a server is meant to sign any messages. And any federated servers are to have a copy of your public key.
If you change implementation (or re-install the same implementation without copying your private key) then federated servers will reject your messages as your signature doesn't match their key.
Theoretically you should be able to get around this by copying private keys, but there might be further problems when switching implementations - I haven't researched that.
Some implementations (e.g. mastodon) have a 'self destruct' command that can be used before decommissioning an instance. If you run this, then you might be able to switch to a new implementation, as previously federated servers should delete their record, and restart federation from a new server as and when needed.
