also looking for coat recommendations from cyclist punk types like @peoplelikedogs @mart0 etc

what kind of jacket should i get that's small and warm but doesn't look like expensive hiking dork gear? i want to wear shorts and leggings this winter but my current coat is huge and doesn't work visually with that.

@dantescanline These days I'm kinda turned off by all the plastic-fiber, "hiking dork" as you call it, stuff. I would say go for layering with an anorak shell. If you want (almost) waterproof stuff with natural fibers you'll have to go for waxed cotton or Ventile/Etaproof. It's expensive. But seems like it will last a long time.

I have an old waxed cotton jacket which is great because you can touch it up yourself. But kinda heavy. A personal near-term goal is to make something like this:

@praxeology cool project! i am looking for thin and probably partially plastic i guess, just for fashion reasons that i hate the big bulky feeling coat i have now.

if your coat is water proof enough to protect a phone does it count as permacomputing? maybe we can spray you down next event and test it out 🤣

@dantescanline Oh sure. A phone will be fine. It just sometimes starts to seep in at the seams if I'm out longer in a real downpour. And the wax smells nice too.

I've seen tutorials where people take normal cotton canvas and wax it DIY: https://diode.zone/w/njC5GcCMNDM9yQvpgyPSAN

Would be fun to try with a second-hand nordic-style cotton ski anorak. I've seen them in the shops around here cheap.
