It's actually fine to not look at the news.
Ignore the news for a day, a week, a month or as long as you need to. It's completely fine.
You might feel a sense of responsibility as an informed citizen to keep up to date on current events. But subjecting yourself to constant exposure to upsetting minutiae about things that are far away that you have no influence or control over can be traumatic. And avoiding that painful experience is not the same as avoiding a direct personal problem that you need to face and deal with. It's actually a healthy, sensible choice to make.
Read a book, take a walk, bake some bread, call a friend, whatever.
Just don't look at the news if you don't feel up to it.
The world will be fine if you are not up to date on the latest shameless palaver. You might instead focus on some of the many really important and nice things that you actually can manage and negotiate that are much closer to home.

I don't think #spooncarving will ever be my main thing but it's such a nice way to practice and experiment. This little spoon is for the sugar bowl. It was a piece of birch around a knot that I almost threw in the compost but then I thought it might be worth trying to work that swerving grain.

Very Sorry but I will have to cancel. Literally surrounded by sick crying babies, sinus infection and the server setup is broken.
Maybe next year.
But don't let me stop you trying to roll your own. Here's a lovely track to get you started:

Happy New Year!
I will be doing my (now traditional) SKI JUMP AMBIENT dj stream at 14:00 CET today.
Suggested Mode of Listening:
- Tune your TV or whatever to the live Ski Jump competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen
- Turn off the sound
- Plug this set into a nice speaker
- Lay on the sofa, watching humans fly gracefully through the winter air
I will post an update and reply at 14:00 with the URL.

Maybe we should stop calling them Notifications and instead refer to Interruptions.
"Working on some stuff so I've turned off interruptions for a while."
"Right on."

Do you enjoy SPAM and advertising?
Do you find it annoying when actual humans who don't use mega-corp services send you important messages?
Then sign up for GMAIL! It was kinda convenient in 2005.
But seriously people, GMAIL is taking important, legit emails from non-megacorp email providers and dumping them the junk folder or just not delivering them. At the same time they are themselves a big target and source of spam. And every time you check your mail, you are enabling some not-very-admirable millionaires and billionaires obsessed with senseless, destructive growth.
You don't have to delete your account. Just set up forwarding and ditch GMAIL for a different, more wholesome provider. It is actually not that hard. You might enjoy the result.

For some last-minute, end-of year #permacomputing joy, please join us in Berlin for a workshop:
[#]# POST:COM:POST
15.12.2024 from 12-17:00h
kindly hosted by:
/rosa
Heidelberger Str. 28
12059 Berlin
In this workshop, we will attempt to install the Linux-based PostmarketOS on "obsolete" Android devices and find convivial new uses for them. This event will be more of a collective hacking and experimentation session than a traditional pedagogical instruction format. We can't promise to make every old device work again but we can offer a fun, informative and supportive environment.

I've actually been doing the #DecemberAdventure but I only just got around to publishing some logs. Mostly playing around with some very primitive graphics and reinventing the vector geometry wheel. Pretty fun so far.
My still skimpy project log is here: https://wintermute.org/misc/dec24adv/

Ok Lazyweb. I'm looking for a web site where somebody had posted a bunch of graphic fill patterns scanned from the 1970s. I think these were from some phototypesetting system but it might have been something else.
I am driving myself nuts looking for the link now. It was posted here about 2 months ago. #design

A friend was over visiting, hanging out in our kitchen. She was very interested in all the home-made jams, infusions, nuts and drying herbs. With some pride, I told her about #foraging and preserving them myself and at some point she stops and says excitedly, "You're a witch!"
Best compliment I've had in quite a while.

The Next #permacomputing #Berlin Meet-Up Will Happen
Lichtenrader Str. 49
https://offline.place/
This meet-up presents BesserAlsNeu, a project to support people in the neighborhood and beyond to use their digital devices sustainably with the help of free software.
"We provide support in setting up and using Linux operating systems on laptops or Android custom ROMs on smartphones and tablets. We also collect any old devices, up-cycle them and then give them out free of charge, for example to those in need or to cultural or social projects in the neighborhood."
BesserAlsNeu is a project by Resi - the resource shop in Alt-Treptow at Bouchéstraße 79 B.
https://resi-ressourcen.org
We will begin with a short presentation of the project, followed by discussion. Afterward, there will be an open session with recycled devices to check out and advice for anyone looking to repurpose an old laptop or phone. There will be a few USB install sticks for those excited enough to try it on their own device.

Sometimes, the only way to get things done is to completely neglect all the other "urgent" stuff and just do the one thing. If you can shush your inner-scolding-patriarch for long enough to finish or at least, make some progress, it's worth it.
