And just went out to dig a few holes to toss in some potatoes and oca that had sprouted roots, and got followed very closely behind by Mrs Thrush looking for food. She found a whole worm and toyed with it for a while but left half of it behind strangely.

My mum told me if you cut a worm in half it grows the missing bit again.
Two worms then.
I cut a lot of worms in half in my younger days to test things out. Not sure if her theory was right.
