Toot

This is your perennial reminder that if you're at a presentation, and a speaker asks for questions, please ask a question. A question ends in an inflection and a question mark.

If you want to chat with the speaker, wait til their off stage. They'd love to chat with you! But please respect the time of the audience and ask thoughtful short questions while the speaker is on stage, and have conversations later.

@glasnt ideally ask also questions, that can be answered in a few sentences.

@weddige @glasnt The speaker has to help here. By actually answering in a few sentences, rather than using it as an excuse to go into the 2,000 word chunk (only very vaguely related to the question) that they weren't able to include in the main speech for time reasons, thereby making sure nobody else gets to ask a question.

@glasnt I don't really agree with that. I think the two rules should be: 1) Keep it short, 2) Engage with what the speaker says. Ideally this will then invite a response.

I've been in enough presentations where there are experts in the crowd who honestly do have something to add.

As long as they keep it short. Keeping it short is the real rule.

@thomasbeagle @glasnt if a speaker has a "questions or comments" section, sure. If it's a Q&A section and you're giving a comment, regardless of how short or your level of expertise, you're failing to follow instructions and being a jerk. If you have some great insights you want to share with an audience, submit a talk like the actual speaker did

@glasnt

And don’t try to skate around this by making a statement about what you think about and then appending β€œdon’t you agree?” πŸ™ƒ

@glasnt

and there should be an ejector button for anyone starting "this is more a comment than a question"....
