Given the general state of tension in the world, I want to share a project that’s just getting started, that has already created some joy in my community here in Richmond.
I just started playing music in public this year; it’s part of a response to some frankly traumatic personal events.
My band - an electronic duo performing as J&R’s Music World - played out first gig out at a house party in Washington DC in September.

As we practiced, we’d been discussing how in our hometown of Richmond VA, there’s lots of noise music, and a surprisingly vibrant live dance music scene, but less space for things that don’t sit easily in those categories. We wanted to find a venue that would let us put on performers like that - we didn’t even know if there are many of them, since there’s not a consistent space for it.
The day after our first gig, we checked out a potential venue, on a Sunday afternoon. It was … quiet. The manager was there, though, and she liked our idea. She gave us a date for the first event - about 5 weeks out. We named it Sunday Soundtracks, and got started on the logistics.

Fairly quickly, we found a person to run sound; we figured it’s our event, so we’ll play, added a performer from Washington DC we knew, and got a recommendation for a local performer we didn’t know about. Here’s the flyer for the first event:

And the event went really well! The PA sounded good - I will never forget what it felt like to do our soundcheck, and hear how good our duo sounded. With a proper sound system and talented person behind it, we sound great. The other performers had a great time, and we smashed the record for a Sunday at this venue. We got around 50 people over the course of the afternoon.

Now, Sunday Soundtracks is going to be a regular event going forward! We’ll be at our home base - Kindred Spirit Satellite - the fourth Sunday of every month, starting with December 22nd.
The calendar was already booked for November, but we’re throwing one anyway - we found another space to host us this time, and are putting on two performers from the Richmond Synth Collective - a meetup group here that is proving to be a great hub for meeting people and sharing knowledge.
