Follows Hiromasa, an amiable but minor young lord in the Imperial court, as he becomes the unofficial liaison and eventual friend to Seimei, the most accomplished astrologer/magician (onmyoji) of the era. Due to his partial fox ancestry, Seimei is a distrusted outcast who has become a misanthrope and who Miromasa must persuade to help against spiritual afflictions.

This starts as a more episodic series of creepy investigations, but becomes an increasingly action packed exploration of suffering, internal conflict, and complexities of personal relationships. There’s a strong undercurrent of trying to resolve underlying problems, rather than simply blasting them away.

Some of the characters and their outlooks are actually really refreshing. Side characters, who might otherwise seem a once-and-done mystery to solve, gradually become pivotal in resolving things toward the climax of the series. Even many of the antagonists are generally relatable.

A really enjoyable watch.
