I think the difference between painting and music is best illustrated by how people generally have fun at "paint nite" events.

No one does a "music instrument nite" event.

It may just be my own skill issue, but I want to say that it takes at least two years of pretty serious training on any typical instrument (piano, guitar etc.) to be merely tolerable in a casual sing along setting w friends.

Anyone can pick up a paint brush and stick what they made on their wall and often feel genuinely good about it.

@mittimithai Ah, I didn't understand the context of total newbies doing these things.

Although many can sing or drum or shake tambourines with no training. Just like one can paint poorly, one can sing poorly and still have fun.
