@tithonium You run your own mastodon instance, correct? What kind of hardware do you need? (Thinking of self-hosting a family one.)

@garpu the Clacks is currently running on an m5.4xlarge in EC2 us-west-2. Before that it was running on an i5-2500 mini-itx system with 8gb of ram.
It doesn’t take a LOT of resources. It really depends how many people you’re hosting and how many people they follow.
Media storage is likely to be your biggest concern. Some places use object stores, I just use the file system, and it’s currently taking 1/3TB.

@tithonium Gotcha. It would be sub-20 people, and not federated with anyone else? Just a place for family to connect that isn't facebook, because we're all spread out. I guess it depends upon how much shitposting my brother-in-law does. :)

@garpu oh, yeah, if you’re not federating your storage requirements should be trivial.

@tithonium Cool beans. We've got 3 raspberry pi's just sitting around collecting dust.
