Toot

Written by GIMP on 2024-11-06 at 20:24

We are very happy to present you with GIMP 3.0.0 RC1! 🥳

This is our first release candidate for what will be GIMP 3.0.0. Now is the time for everyone to test!

It is the result of years of work. I'm sure it still has many bugs (and you should report!), but we hope you will still appreciate the new version. 🤗

@GIMP I wish i could test it, but besides of not having a computer, i don't know how to properly test things

@Ray_Of_Sunlight @GIMP

One way of testing is to just use it like normal and report when you encounter bugs or weird things.

@Triffen @GIMP Not yet:

Bruno Lopes has truly taken the lead to improve our build and packaging process on multiple platforms.
Over the summer, he created an experimental AppImage build (as detailed in a prior news post). If you are interested in improving it further and hopefully making it available as a standard download, please get in touch! Bruno has also created flatpak build scripts to make the process of creating your own GIMP flatpak much easier.

It's not there yet since there are many things (continued from my quote) Bruno is tackling with AppImage being just one and this work isn't completely done yet, but can continue til release.

@jfaulken @georgebaily @GIMP Yes, it's long overdue. The least disruptive name change would be to call it GNU IMP.

@not2b @jfaulken @georgebaily @GIMP 💯 this.

When they change the name, I'll boost everything with that new name. (I've - I suspect like many - used this software for well over 2 decades and it is my goto image editing app - until I switched from CaptureOne to DarkTable, I used it to add the copyright to every one of my posted photos).

Until then, they will only hear radio silence from this account.

The ball is in their court.

@techpengu @georgebaily @GIMP "gimp" is a slur. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/gimp

@not2b @georgebaily @GIMP But a word can have different meaning right?

Even the dictionary listed four different meaning.

As long not being used for a context of insulting, that should be okay, right?

As an Indonesian, I don't get your mindset. People in SEAsia can simply accept that an exact word can have bad meaning while others interprete it neutral or even positive, mitigating any unnecessary cultural clash.

I guess that's typical weird Western mindset of cultural purity ┐( ̄ヘ ̄)┌

@techpengu @georgebaily @GIMP Notice the order. The most common meaning is listed first. I have a lot of respect for the project and the program, but the name is not the best. I suggested GNU IMP as it then still expands to GNU Image Manipulation Program. There are other possibilities.

Written by aruga 🇮🇩 on 2024-11-07 at 01:04

@not2b @georgebaily @GIMP The order is still biased on region, right?

English these days becomes such a global language to the point each region makes it own rules and meaning.

In English Asia, Singaporean English, or Malaysian English, gimp as a slur is simply irrelevant.

Forcing American or British English as the default is racist.

@techpengu @not2b @georgebaily @GIMP Forget the order, NONE of the definitions have anything relevant to the program. Also please watch the film Pulp Fiction, it was a major release in the 90s with viewers across the globe, and anyone who has seen it has a horrible horrible character brought to mind by this name.

@not2b Merriem-Webster is a good source for American English. It does not reflect usage outside of the USA.

Note that the Oxford English Dictionary only lists this use in 4th position and Collins in 2nd: according to them, a gimp is mainly a garment.

@GIMP Not sure if I should report it because it's not a bug but there's some QoL regressions for me.

For example the Scale Image dialog used to have the width value selected by default which was a time saver, I'd also loved to merge menu and title bar but having to aim at the close button instead of just trowing the mouse in the corner is too annoying, and the removal of floating selections is disturbing my worflow.

@mimolo Could you tell us how the removal of floating selections is disturbing your workflow? We had similar reports during development and always ended up finding a good way so that existing workflow would not lose anything in efficiency.

@GIMP When I want to move some part of an image what I usually do, and i do it a lot, is Select pixels, Cut, Paste, Drag to new position, Anchor with one click on canvas, and repeat.

Now it's Select, Cut, Paste, change tool to Move, Drag to new position, Merge layer by clicking on a button, change tool back to Rectangle, and repeat.

I could make it faster by learning some new shortcuts though but not as before.

Written by GIMP on 2024-11-08 at 18:31

@mimolo If pasting as a floating selection is your main (or maybe even only?) paste method, you may change the ctrl-v shortcut to be "Paste as Floating Data". Then your paste will always do a Floating paste.

Or if you need both, you could set a specific shortcut to this action and use one or the other when needed.

Wouldn't that work?

Basically floating paste is not dead. It's just not the default paste anymore when pasting to a layer.

Written by mimolo on 2024-11-08 at 23:08

@GIMP ok nice to know, I also found out I can use the transformation tool to directly move my selection without having to Cut/Paste.

That's how I was doing it with krita already (with their move tool though).

=> More informations about this toot | More toots from mimolo@mastodon.social

Written by GIMP on 2024-11-08 at 23:23

@mimolo Yeah though we were wondering if it was a good idea if the transform tools are still creating a floating selection. This may not be the most consistent behavior, and also this is quite weird with several layers selected at once (right now it merges them all into a single floating selection). 🤔

@GIMP Hi! I'm really happy about 3.0 RC1, using it right now! One thing I noticed is that the font filter is broken. No matter what I type in it, no fonts show up. It has to be empty for me to see any fonts. I tried to file a bug report about it but the registration system into the gnome gitlab is soooo gnarly I gave up after about 15 minutes.
