I now understand why people spend a lot of time in the character creator of this game. For me it crashes after customizing the hair of my pretty character, and there is no autosave.
I usually start a DA game with a human and then lose interest (possibly after 130 hours of fun). Now I might choose a human or elf depending on the parity of crashes.

Disabling hair strands fixes the crashes. I'm still anxious about the black loading screens, they momentarily look as if the computer crashed.
After playing for two hours, I feel the game is fun and much less overwhelming than DAI or BG3. The start of the story seems to better match what I remember from the previous games than usual sequels.
My Rook looks like a nonbinary good boy.

Another thing I like about the character creator is that I don't choose the name the character is referred by (Rook), while the name they technically have has a fixed per background last name. I can roll a random first name. Not like the other games where I must type the name not knowing anything about their universe.
Still, I have no idea what the available tattoos or scars could mean. So most of the choices there are not proper for me without a story.

Both my style of playing (involving confusing controls with other games and forgetting to dodge) and another crash (this time requiring me to reboot the computer) make the frequent autosaves very useful.
I like that the culture of the ruins is very into statues of a wolf.
The darkspawn are getting more monstrous; it's good that it's not a survival horror game, while they would fit one very well.

I'm happy how cheerful my Rook is, both when choosing the first dialogue option and when they see themselves in a mirror.
I liked when they talked to Varric; I see that people might be into manly bearded mentors (I don't have such).
Thinking about the events of DAO and the earlier four blights resulting from only a small part of the blight referenced now.
And now I'm very curious about the origin of red lyrium and the blight.

A quest of just talking, with several opportunities to pet animals in a city. Rook mentioning being nonbinary after their companion said a line exactly matching my experience.
I want more of this.

And I reached the first main quest that requires a decision, failing some unfinished side quests. There is no indication of this until the quest is finished.
I might load an earlier save and complete them first.
If I maintain the interest in this game and I'm not distracted, I might replay with the other choices next time, but I can do slightly more this time.
