i’m sure i’m as brainwashed as any american, but saying that democracy was only available to white christian men until the 1960s is disappearing an awful lot of history to make a particular point about federal law.

depends which angle you look at i guess. it IS a real mixed bag, state by state

@64 I think that it was a facile, partially accurate, and somewhat backwards way of saying that only since 1964 could you claim that the franchise officially extended to all non-white, non-male, non-property-owning citizens. And there are still so many exceptions, like felons who have served their sentences.

Of course, what "officially" constitutes the franchise does not even remotely match the facts on the ground thanks to all the shenanigans in red states.

@phil_stevens well, and no one should be patting themselves on the back until permanent residents can also vote

@64 Very much this. Citizens-only is deeply regressive and harmful, and the far right likes it that way. Of course, so are the Senate, the Electoral College, and lifetime appointments to the federal bench....

@phil_stevens @64 I appreciate that permanent residents can vote in NZ, but I'm not aware of any other country where this is the case, at least for national elections. (Ok the UK is a bit of a strange case). It should be, though!

@va2lam @64 It was a pleasant surprise when we moved here in 2005 and found that we were eligible to vote in that election.

Skin in the game is really a common sense requirement.
