@ascentale #bikenitepq Biking around here is nice, but I'm daydreaming about some adventures further afield ... has anyone had experiences or advice about flying with a bike as luggage?

@nickzoic some basics: you need the right sized box, that's the hard part, and you pay an extra ~$100 per flight for oversized luggage. For some flights (eg you're in Alaska and on a smaller plane between cities) you might want to call in advance to make sure the plane/crew will be able to accommodate. Then, you also have to pack tools because in order to fit 🚲 in the box you have to take the front wheel off (and maybe more).

@fixiemama @nickzoic I bought a semi rigid bike case (the fame and wheels fit on an internal steel frame and the bottom of the cordura bag is rigid and reinforced. My partner uses a cardboard box. I think she is the smart one as unless you have somewhere to store the bag at the other end it costs a lot in left luggage, whereas a box can just be recycled. Schiphol will sell you a proper bike box!

@fixiemama @nickzoic and I’ve only used it twice (once it was stored by my partner’s aunt in Malmo 🆓 and the other time at Schiphol 💶💶💶) thought there were more ultra races in my future but I decided to build a new family instead 😊
