Ancestors

Spent some time the past few nights knocking out a proof-of-concept for a detective style game for the GameBoy. The idea is that you interview people and look for clues, and each item gets added to an investigator's journal.

The tricky bit was to control the sequence items were added to the journal. Took a while to figure out a system to make that work but now you can find clues in any order, and they fill up the journal starting on page 1.

@awilbert This is looking pretty awesome so far! Did you do the art, as well?

@pinakographos Thanks! All of the placeholder graphics here are freebies from itch.io. It was literally just green boxes until this morning, and I needed something better to look at while experimenting.

I have been playing around with Photoshop and Tiled a bunch though, so have some things in the pipeline to start building actual tilesheets and assembling maps. Being limited to 4 color indexed PNGs is kind of fun!

@awilbert Gotcha. I I look forward to seeing it develop! I have a great appreciation for retro games, not just from growing up with them, but seeing the clever ways that designers have worked within the hardware limitations.

@pinakographos 100% agree. Retro-inspired-but-actually-modern games are neat, but I'm really into the new crop of games developed to run on retro hardware.

I may have already bought a hardware flasher a few boards, and shells to make a few physical cartridges. Kinda jumped the gun on that one... Really, the next step is to write a script and flowchart the gameplay now that I'm confident I can build it.

@awilbert Sounds like an incentive to keep going, to ensure that the carts get used. I regret donating my original Game Boy to the thrift store during my last move. And the SNES. I do still have the NES though.
