Last night I posted a thought about the coal export facility in Tsawwassen, BC and these stupid tariffs. Someone* boosted it, then animated it into a Loop video with an almost direct quote. Then that video got served back to me as I casually flipped through the Loops app. Was a very strange experience.

The biggest coal export facility in North America is through BC Canada, and if/when the Canadians shut off that spigot, it's going to have a huge impact on Trump’s supporters in Wyoming, Montana, and other western states. Just more MAGAs shooting themselves in the foot.

Did you know that you can cancel your streaming services and subscribe to fresh flowers instead? A local florist will just bring them to your house on a regular schedule. They don't even check to see if it's a special occasion or anything.

This is a wild QR code proof of concept that resolves to two different URLs depending on the angle and distance your camera happens to be at.

Just backed #Pixelfed on Kickstarter. Even if you don't see yourself using the photo-sharing Instagram challenger yourself, we'll all benefit from a more vibrant and diverse fediverse. If you can spare a few , consider throwing a few @dansup's way.

Is it weird to boost your own #Pixelfed account on mastodon?

The cool thing about the #fediverse is that you can follow and interact with Pixelfed photographers and PeerTube channels from masto and other ActivityPub servers if you prefer to keep things consolidated in a single timeline.

Putting unsubscribe links behind domains that have a high likelihood of being denied by pi-hole or ad blockers has got to be some kind of intentionally user-hostile design pattern, right?

Guess I'll have to pick up the phone, turn off wifi, and unsubscribe through the cell network. Again.

My little electronics projects have always been a tangle of wires, soldered and stuffed into boxes. One of my 2025 goals is to learn how to design and manufacture a few custom electronic PCBs. I'm spending a lot of time in the Fritzing docs and forums. Starting simple, here's a rough component layout draft for my ballooning button box for Flight Sim,

Update to Gran Turismo 7 adds an open wheeled 1955 Mercedes-Benz racer, which is right up my alley. It's got a plaid seat! GT7 is probably the best reason to own a #PSVR2

My #msfs2024 experience: Picked the C172 and departure parking. Everything smooth so far. Couldn't figure out how to get the plane started, probably because all of the covers were still on? Blindly clicked around to try and do the "walk around” phase, but wasn’t intuitive. Checked the checklist to see if there was an autocomplete option, but didn't find anything. Then it crashed and put me back into the queue. 🤷

Maybe try again tonight when I have more time to look at the docs.

I will never understand the capacity of some people to come through a door, then slam it in the face of people behind them.

These voters entered the country illegally, then got amnesty under Reagan. But they're somehow different, more deserving of a place in this melting pot. Then this kicker: “…the Alvarez family has friends and relatives who are currently undocumented… she's not worried they would be deported under Trump's plan since "they're not breaking any laws.”

Adjustments made to my #GameBoy detective game's notebook mechanic. Now the clue pages are full screen, rather than limited to small sprites. This allows me to do much more intricate clues on each page, including large sketches, maps, and cipher puzzles. Made a prototype substitution cipher and worked out the code to make it all function and be persistent across scene changes.

Right now, each journal entry is an actor-sprite, activated and positioned by a bunch of variables. I'm severely limited by the GameBoy's tile limits. Each journal entry can only be 20 8px x 16px sprite tiles, with a max of 10 sprite tiles displayed on any horizontal row. I might have to switch to an in-memory background tile-swapping system to fill more of the journal page area, but thats going to require a bunch of custom code that I'm not sure I'm ready for.

Spent some time the past few nights knocking out a proof-of-concept for a detective style game for the GameBoy. The idea is that you interview people and look for clues, and each item gets added to an investigator's journal.

The tricky bit was to control the sequence items were added to the journal. Took a while to figure out a system to make that work but now you can find clues in any order, and they fill up the journal starting on page 1.
