Something that @jennsimmons does in https://webkit.org/blog/16026/css-masonry-syntax/ that's a broadly useful design practice is laying out clear design goals.
It's often the case when there's disagreement about solutions that people have different-but-unarticulated goals in mind, and it's almost impossible to come to a reasoned consensus when that's true.
The way out is to come to an agreement on goals, and then compare how various solutions stack up against them.
