I visited Sam’s Club (family member has a membership) and now they have paper signs at some of the registers stating “We do not accept tap or Apple Pay”—ummmm, those Ingenico Lane/7000 card terminals absolutely have NFC readers built-in and are on by default, so your corporate jackass overlords (Walmart) disabled them.
I feel bad for the employees that have to repeat themselves because of these consumer-hostile decisions to push their apps (Scan & Go and Walmart Pay).

And for the people that don’t follow this stuff, other than merchants sorting out their custom terminal software that they chose to add, there’s no additional processing costs for NFC/Apple Pay/Google Pay/etc.
If there are any cuts to be had, it’s on the issuing bank’s end (i.e. a card issued by American Express, Chase, Bank of America, etc.) - merchants don’t see that and aren’t charged extra.
