Helloooo SFBA Fediverse!
I want SFBA.social to grow! :sfbasocial: I’ve been personally investigating ways for our instance to advertise to local users with the power of peer and on-foot advertising. I believe one of the best parts of our instance is that it is local. We are not aiming to be a mega instance, but offer the platform as a space for Bay Area residents to connect to the fediverse, and I want more of our neighbors to know about it.
I have several questions for you, and I would love to hear any and all ideas you have for sharing SFBA.social (or any other regional instances) with our neighbors!

First and foremost, if you're a local user, how did you hear about sfba.social? Was it just random chance? A friend or organizer group?

Do you have any suggestions for places we can advertise around the SF Bay Area for relatively cheap? We’re not for profit, and we have an extremely limited budget that is almost entirely focused on server and media resource costs. We’re happy to talk to anyone you’d suggest!
Unfortunately, in my research, this is likely not practical since we're in the hundreds of dollars per advertisement range.

If you run a business, would you be open to having a ‘business card’ for our instance which provides a QR code for more information about our service and our mission?
I drew up a mock card body, but I don't have much of artistic eye 😀

How did you find the signup flow and the suggested account list? Would you click out to a service like #SpreadMastodon if we augmented the Mastodon source code to use it?

If you’re in the Bay Area and you chose another Mastodon instance, could you share some information about how you chose them? If there are things we can improve on, we’d love to hear about it!

Thanks for reading the thread! If I've missed something, or you have has a positive experience elsewhere I'd love to hear about it! Happy tooting :sfbasocial:

@cd24 for me, I had no idea what instance to originally join, and inertia keeps me where I am, but:
... In an easy to find place, would go a long way towards deciding "is moving to this instance worth it".

@jgilbert I agree it’d be great to expose this information more clearly. Even with a Code of Conduct, actually seeing what the mods do would probably be very helpful!
Thank you!

@cd24 Maybe it's more guerrilla marketing like posting stickers on light posts or street chalk art in heavy traffic areas such as Muni stations or something? I find traditional advertising doesn't work much these days.

@TheOverheadWire street chalk art would be super cool!
I’m always anxious to put up light post fliers since they often become litter, but I’d 100% be down if we could reasonably mitigate that.
That said, I often consult my community board so perhaps we should post to those!
