meanwhile, in my own hunt for gainful employment, I find I have to actually provide references for the first time in .. 15? years

previous employer is maybe a no-go, employer before that doesn't exist.

I know maybe 3 people well enough to ask for references, but they'll mostly be a request from 'out of the blue' as such.

this is what I get for not being a 'connector' I guess.

@froosh My current employer doesn’t provide references, and nor does the one before that. That takes me back to 2005, which as a university will have no one who remembers me. I’d be SOL. Surely employers understand this is how things are now?
