@ryanleesipes I'd like to share some feedback from a "normal user" outside of usual nerd circle that most actively engages with devs (me included).
The aforementioned user wasn't happy, he didn't find UI nearly as intuitive as original Windows Mail app (now replaced by Outlook), they also complained on the speed of search. They also liked Spark, but decided to go with #Thunderbird after all due to performance issues with the former.

@ryanleesipes Yes, they found it very unintuitive and mentioned changing a lot of settings. Unfortunately they didn't remember too much what exactly bothered them other than slow search and didn't want to spend more time discussing it.
Nevertheless, I would bet that complicated legacy menus you were fixing recently didn't help. I would also check out Windows Mail, if somebody liked it so much it must have some good UX elements which might be possible to be incorporated into Thunderbird.
