How is this not illegal??? Cards Against Humanity is PAYING people who didn't vote in 2020 to apologize, make a voting plan, and post #DonaldTrumpIsAHumanToilet—up to $100 for blue-leaning people in swing states. I helped by getting a 2024 Election Pack: http://Apologize.lol

@pluralistic If money is speech, then they are definitely making a statement here about the health of our democracy. Musk could have given EVERY American more than $100 for their vote for the amount he paid for X. Perhaps this is the end stage bread-and-circuses phase of the Republic.

@rlcw @pluralistic Wait. What happens if you put your name in the dumb website? There must be some value to the fascists in gathering names, or they wouldn't pay $47 for them. I mean, it's nice LOLZ and Cards Against Humanity may get some money, but if I was a USAian I sure wouldn't be filling out that form.

There are reports in how this data is used to strike off people from voter registers shortly before the final registration date, so that they don't notice or are unable to re-register on time. This is well worth more than $47. Please do some research before you make your choices.

I couldn't find the original article I read on it some time ago, but here is what a search engine came up with on this topic: https://www.democracydocket.com/analysis/what-you-need-to-know-about-voter-roll-maintenance/
I glanced through, it might give you some first hints for where to start a deep-dive.
Disclaimer: I didn't fact-check this linked article.

Addition: I remember now the article I read some time ago was about websites pretending to register you to vote. It warned that there is no central, nation-wide official website. Those "services" may lead people to the correct state website, forward your data to it, do nothing at all, or forward data only for some groups of voters and discard the rest.
It's like always on the web: Convenience might be a risky choice.

@Datterich @pedrosanta @Plumbert @pluralistic Signing this petition however does not claim to register you for voting, nor have I found anything in the article you shared on somebody being able to remove you from a voter list just because they don't like your face.

I am not saying you shouldn't use the offered service. I proposed to take into account more aspects before making a decision.

@Datterich @Plumbert @pluralistic How can you strike voters from voter registers using this data?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from rlcw@ecoevo.social
@rlcw @Datterich @Plumbert @pluralistic if you're playing by the rules, you can't, but the GOP already stole one election in 2000 by "accidentally" purging registered voters in FL (in districts which were likely to vote Gore).

@pluralistic : as an European, the whole SuperPAC/data about electors is completely unbelievable.
As is the fact that so many people don’t vote (in my country, elections always happen on Sunday and it is mandatory to vote. You can be fined for not voting)

@pluralistic The same reasons it's not illegal to prevent people from voting entirely because it is not illegal to prevent people to vote at all, because some whiner politician thinks they MIGHT vote blue.
These are people who bought land purely to prevent Trump's illegal wall. It's a case of 'you stop first entirely and I'll storp entirely'

This and the make-Elon-pay thing are outliers in my VPN-exit-point history. Normally, due to IP geofencing, I very much want my apparent IP address to be somewhere in Europe. With this, I want it to be somewhere in the US; except I'm not willing to allow all my /other/ traffic to appear temporarily in the US just to support these initiatives. Sigh.
