One of the reasons for this move starts with my strong belief that if Fediverse is to succeed where the traditional centralized social media networks have failed, it should be, for the most part, supported (and also financially) by it's users. You're paying for a service. Either that you host, or that someone hosts it for you.
Otherwise, sooner or later, you (and your media and data) end up being the product. There are no free lunches.

Ahoy Fediverse, I will be moving my account soon to eu.mastodon.green, managed by @JohanEmpa
The follows should move as well, so I don't think any action is needed if you follow me, but, let's see.

So feel free to drop a reply or suggest a fediverse/federated platform that could be interesting for a smaller personal social media network, to connect privately with family, friends, and close contacts, that's still fun to use.
I'll be exploring Diaspora, Hubzilla and Friendica meanwhile.

Lots of close contacts don't have the interest. But these are also contacts that aren't/weren't Twitter or microblogging users, but relatively frequent social media network users. Microblogging isn't an activity they cater to. And that's okay.

Mastodon is great as a federated microblogging platform—in the traditional sense that the centralized Twitter established.
But as a social media network, like one we can share more personal stuff with a wide degree of privacy and social circles with variable tightness—like it was pioneered by the centralized Google+/Facebook and even federated diaspora—it falters. It's missing the tighter privacy and circles control to reach that space.

I am not going to lie, this whole 'efficient and affordable home server' is right up my alley.
So tempted to expand the home 'lab' infra to support self-hosting a bunch of stuff.
