But Elon is evil, because he has “strange” political views.
—
One thing I dislike in our western culture is that we value (political) views more than deeds.
—
Oh, did I mention that without Elon, US will be #3 in space behind China and Russia? And who kicked the global EV industry?
—
In Bulgaria we have a saying: deeds make a person’s soul beautiful.

As someone who has grown up in a communist country I despise any form of suppression or intolerance. But in communist Bulgaria I also learned that people should be responsible for themselves. If I am a braun idiot with a moustache, go after me, not after the media I use. Because where do we stop? The internet provides? The regulator of the wavelengths? The producer of the paper, or even the logger who cut the tree?

@tuparev @designatednerd Your PoV assumes human beings are perfect, don't make mistakes, and are not easily manipulated, especially as a group. Any system, from small things to political and social systems, that are based on those flawed assumptions are doomed to fail.
A good example: flying VS driving. Virtually nobody dies flying any more because the system assumes all humans involved will make mistakes. Driving: kills thousands a day because it assumes everyone drives perfectly and legally.

I am the last one to believe in perfection. But I am trying to use a bit of understanding and compassion. We do not know, the path any person had to walk to reach the current day. But I am absolutely confident, that for the very few who make a dent in the universe we should separate the person from the deeds. We should fight the bed dents. This would be our moral obligation. But also acknowledge the good deeds.

@tuparev @arroz I’m pretty sure think pieces trying to psychoanalyze him and determine if ultimately he was good or bad for the world will continue to come out for decades.
But ultimately if you’re looking at deeds, you do have to weigh the harms of the bad with the help of the good.
How you measure that is subjective, but at least in my book, I feel like if you own a large communication platform and people are using it to sow hateful chaos and you do nothing, that wipes out a lot of good.

@designatednerd @tuparev It’s worse than that. He stood on stage next to Trump and told people if the democrats win, this will be the last election in the US (I watched him saying this word by word, PT news played the video).
The good deeds don’t balance out the bad ones. If I’m a great guy and help the poor and donate millions to my community, but occasionally I go out at night and kill somebody, I’m a murder. Period. The good deeds means nothing. And he’s a fascist trying to elect a fascist.

@tuparev when his politics include participating in a rally for a wannabe fascist dictator, anything else pales in comparison. It’s not “strange”, it’s way, way beyond that.

My parents did suffer under the real fascists, and I did spend my time in a real communist prison. US is surrounded by 2 large lakes and never experience the real horrors of my parents and my generation. I will advise to turn down a bit the polemic, to soften the vocabulary, and to start trying to understand the other party. This polemics does disservice to the millions who ended in gulags or in nazi concentration camps. A bit of compassion and humanity on both sides could help.

@tuparev Have you seen Project 2025, which Trump's party, and now by extension Musk, hope to enact? We haven't experienced the horrors you mention yet and we're hoping to not do so.

Sorry, but if you really believe Project 2025 is even close to the horrors of the Gulag or Germany 1938 you are really delusional or you have never learned history!

@tuparev When a leading candidate literally says he'll call out the armed forces against his political opponents and has previously incited an insurrection to block peaceful transfer of power, it's history trying to repeat itself. To say otherwise is naive. https://x.com/davidcayj/status/1845577946821513542?s=46

I visited the US for the first time in 1991. It was a normal civilised country with friendly people. Now it's governed by a mono-party and big money, and the media's role is to spread hate and mistrust. This hate is on both sides. Intelligent folks should try to calm down (on both sides), shook hands and start a dialog. For a foreigner like me US now is a militant third world country.
I hope my words do not hurt you, but give you something to think about.

@tuparev not liking either major party is fine, but only one party has supporters who routinely fly swastika flags. Taking the both-sides attitude is uninformed, even ignorant of reality. https://mastodon.social/@flexghost/113305952889350178
