Toot

Got a gift from a friend a couple weekends ago, PHB, DMG, and MM for 3.5e D&D. Edition I started with, but never actually owned books.

Between this and the premium reprints of AD&D released during the wait for 5e, I am only missing 1 book of the "Core 3" from all major editions of D&D. That's the Monster Manual for 4e. I have a PHB, DMG, and MM for all other editions of the shelf.

(Have been tempted for the last year to throw together a homebrew 4e game too.)

@squishymage42 Eh, the 4e MM is probably the worst MM in any edition. Lots of classic omissions, scant lore, and broken mechanics, all of which were rectified in later 4e monster books.

@Tim_Eagon Yeah, I definitely remember the Monster Vault basically just releasing MM1 with MM3 math.

I spent the 4e years mostly just running the prewritten campaigns from Encounters (alongside a homebrew Pathfinder game) so with the statblocks being in the books, I'd never really needed one.

@squishymage42 yep, and with cardboard counters for all the monsters. Great product IMO. The MV2 is awesome too, for both the lore and the late 4e monster design.

@Tim_Eagon I loved 4e monster design with even low level stuff getting mostly unique and flavorful stuff.

Tried converting a white dracolich from an encounters module to 5e once. Uh, that was a lesson to double check my math when half the party was wiped on initiative count 1.

@squishymage42 I had a lot of fun designing 4e monsters for WotC.

@Tim_Eagon I had so much fun playing with them, from both sides of the screen.

I had a living forgotten realms character who got a quasit familiar who then betrayed us. Also ran all the Encounters seasons from Dark Legacy of Evard through the playtest.

(I seriously miss the Encounters writing style for adventures, when they switched to "just run the latest hardcover" like, but that's not designed for 90 minute sessions...)

@squishymage42 I never played Encounters. I think I was busy on Wednesdays and more importantly, my experiences with LFR left a bad taste in my mouth. Instead, I played or DM'd in three long term 4e campaigns (plus a bunch of one shots) with a great group that unfortunately fell apart due to a divorce.

@Tim_Eagon Encounters starting at my local shop in college is what got me started with 4e after my table bounced off it hard when it first came out.

Then the shop needed a substitute DM for a few weeks, and I stepped in, then moved to Michigan and found a group there and then that shop needed a DM to step up to replace one who moved away.

We actually extended the Neverwinter season of Encounters into a 4e home game that went on for years until one of the players died a couple years ago.
