I followed a breadcrumb trail on focus detection from the https://forum.image.sc forum to the micromanager source code to the supplemental info of @royerlab Royer et al 2016† and wow! "Part II: Image Quality Metrics in Theory and Practice" (starts on page 9) should really be its own paper, not a buried aside.
