Some rather wild (in my opinion) MtG card selling has got me looking at that pile of not-so-valuable 1994-ish MtG cards I still have. And I wonder: Are there people playing 1994-ish decks today? So let's say only revised 3rd and older allowed? What would the keywords be for that so I could maybe find some interesting stuff to read about such a thing? #mtg #magic

Also, is there a keyword for "no duplicates except for lands"? I see all those decks that have cards repeated four times over and all I can think is "Dude, that must get boring quickly if the other person always pulls out the same cards, over and over again..."

As far as I've been able to find "old school" is the (rather obvious in RETROspect, hah!) keyword, although there seem to be several "competing" variants of what can be played and how. Since I only have revised 3rd and later cards, the "EC" variant seems most suitable for me. https://www.eternalcentral.com/9394rules/ #mtg #oldschool

Now I wonder if there's a "cheap ass" variant. "Only cards under $0.10 on Cardmarket allowed." Seems like a good restriction? 😄

And I decided on a "cheap ass" trajectory. I was looking over the revised cards and saw quite a few cheap ones that I don't have yet. I mean, I don't even have elven archers! So I'll do a bit of bargain shopping to "fill out" my old collection. And I'll stay away from expensive cards myself, capping my purchases at <$5 with a strong preference for <$1. I even ordered some sleeves finally...

Aha! It's called "Penny Dreadful" and I like it!

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of just collecting a few more 3rd revised edition cards and playing that. I very much like the feeling that it's a "closed" or "finite" game. There's 300-odd cards and that's it, no more. Of those cards about 10-20 are crazy expensive and therefore out, and there's a whole bunch (like at least 150) that are really cheap but I still don't have them all. And I think with a few more of these, some here, some there, it could be a nice enough game to play now and then. Dual lands? Nah! Black Lotus? Come on! Mox what? Get real! Try to beat my plague rats that have web and holy armor cast on them... Or something. 😄

Re-reading the rules of Revised I noticed that we NEVER "played for ante" as is suggested there. And these days, can you imagine? Randomly putting up a dual land against a lightning bolt and the winner takes both cards? Yeah, that's likely. 😄

These are the "revised" rules I have two copies of. I've seen others refer to a more colorful booklet as "revised" but I think that might be 4th edition instead? Anyone know for sure?
