So, @streetcomplete when filling in the questions using the Street Complete app, where are the additional details such as; the road surface, street lighting etc viewable? I can't see such details on the OpenStreetMap website or the OrganicMaps app, even with overlays... So, where are they viewed? What's the point in filling these details in? Are they collected just in case someone develops an app that decides to show this info maybe? #openstreetmap #OrganicMaps

@healthiswealth hey, good question!
Komoot for example used the surface details and in Trail Router you can avoid unlit streets - see screenshots.
But yes, some details may not yet be used, however making them widely available is the start, not the end of this data.
There are also a lot more details mapped in some areas, which the awesome "Straßenraumkarte" is showing off:

@streetcomplete Thank you (and everyone else) for the replies! Yes, this all makes sense now. I hadn't realised how many other apps/services used OSM data, and the extra data, like road surface, at that. I'll continue to contribute using SC/OSM/OM when and where I can. Thanks again! 👍

@healthiswealth also many things can contribute to routing, which you may not be aware of, like street width and lanes can make a difference for travel time: If you have to stop for letting people pass.
So some routers may take cues from such extra data where available.

@healthiswealth Komoot also got an update recently which is for bikes with less grippy wheels, to keep the route mostly on tarmac:

@streetcomplete I had a komoot account when I used to have an iPhone but wasn't a fan of not being able to control my data etc but it was a really good app I thought. This also shows the importance of the community filling in as much as they can, even if it doesn't benefit them directly it can certainly help others out... which is what it's all about :)

@healthiswealth if you just want navigation like in Komoot, checkout the "Mapy.cz".
Works offline, too. So great for riding in remote areas.

@healthiswealth note that streets.gl will show some other details you may map with SC, like building details.

@healthiswealth @streetcomplete The default map at osm.org does distinguish paved from unpaved surfaces, although subtly - in the screenshot the southern Carretera Austral is paved, the northern part and route 235 unpaved.
Surface is, if anything, more important for routing than for rendering. Some routers such as cycle.travel allow you to directly include or exclude certain surfaces, others will adjust estimated travel time depending on the surface.

@healthiswealth @streetcomplete There are also highly customisable map applications such as OsmAnd, which has options to "show road surface" and "show street lighting".
And then there are other uses for OSM data apart from rendering and routing, such as research and statistics. So it's hard to know how any given tag might be used.

@alan @streetcomplete Thanks Alan! Yep understand now from everyone's replies inc yours, thank you 😊

@healthiswealth :
Openstreetmap is not merely a map. It is a geographical database.
When you want a map with particular features shown,
the data is there.

@healthiswealth OSMand can display and use this data. You can enable it beung displayed on the map, and it also shows a breakdown of surfaces during navigation.
It also has navigation options like "avoid unpaved roads" which rely on surface information.
MapComplete.org also displays this info when selecting a way in various of its views.
I'm sure theres more tools out there using it. Its just the official site which hides it behind inspecting the tags.

@laund Thank you for replying! Yes, I'm starting to see the bigger picture and benefits of using such an app like SC. It's great we can make use of all this data should we need to. I'll keep doing my bit and filling in the gaps when and where I can using SC/OSM/OM. Thank you!

@laund @healthiswealth I think the "Straßenraumkarte" takes the cake in terms of features rendered.
The technical preview is limited to a small area in Berlin with static data, thought.

@streetcomplete @laund Thats' a lot of data, even down to the benches in the parks and even the trees. The car symbols representative of parking spaces available I assume?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from healthiswealth@fosstodon.org
@healthiswealth @laund yes those represent the parking lanes you can map with SC as well.
Notice the manhole coveres on the road surface. Took me a while to notice them. ;)

@streetcomplete @laund That's some dedication right there! Was it a single user do you know? Or a community effort? (Not at my PC to check atm).
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from healthiswealth@fosstodon.org
@healthiswealth @laund that's a community effort to showcase the renderer.
If you want to explore something similar, just for your area, have a look at osm2street:
https://a-b-street.github.io/osm2streets/#1.31/0/0
That gives some nice renderings for lanes, turn lanes, crossings etc. and helps to debug them.

@healthiswealth road surface can be and is used by routing/navigation apps (the same for street lights, though more specialized).
