google lost me due to massive tracking, microsoft by disempowerment on my clientOS, meta for violating privacy, apple for high prices on outdated technology, X due to right-wing radical speech, samsung for bloatware, firefox for non-transparent behave, adobe due to content scanning.
What they have in common: They steal and misapply my data.

I'm with you on most of that but still use Firefox, I haven't found a useful alternative not based on Chromium. What do you suggest for Linux and Android?

@pthane Debian stable, grapheneOS (even if a google pixel is needed).

Wife and I have various machines running KDE Neon, Mint, Debian and Manjaro but with Firefox on most, the Debian is a Nextcloud server, no browser on that. What non-chrome browser would you suggest? I used to have Lineage OS on my last phone but there are no FOSS OS for my cheap Oppo. So that has Android I've designed as much as possible.

@Andreas_Sturm good point. I’m wondering Apple’s reasoning from your toot. Apple’s making good efforts for privacy related features. I agree with the prices being horrible (I’m starting to find an alternative for my iPhone) but privacy wise do you think they don’t respect it?

@manueltgomes imho embezzlement begins with the collection of data. And it is not possible to determine what they are really doing with it.
Even Apple will not always win the race for IT security, they will lose my / your data to unknown third parties through e.g. theft.

@Andreas_Sturm fully agree. Data stealing is a problem, especially for companies that collect data. In the case of Apple I give them props in certain areas (App Store and the whole EU thing aside) because, at least from what I see, privacy is something that they care about. But that doesn’t mean that it can’t change. As long as they collect and store data that I know about, want them to collect (like files and photos) and can export I’m ok with. It’s the ad/tracking creepy that I don’t like.

@manueltgomes I feel uncomfortable if all my photos, impressions, moods, buying behavior, fitness data, internet searches, preferences, weaknesses, travel, friends, contacts, books, music, notes, dates, tasks, contracts, calls, etc., etc., so to say my whole life and personality, are stored in one place, on "a machine" in the cloud, potentially accessible to everyone in case of disaster, or abuse of admin rights. Somehow this limits my idea of freedom. I also want to be able to forget. #privacy

@Andreas_Sturm Possibly have you considered not storing data like that online? As in not using apps or methods of saving that data?
No data is private if you give it away.

@otto42 @Andreas_Sturm I fully agree that storing everything online is dangerous. Otto has a point. If you would still want the convenience to access your data from anywhere you can always try to self host. It would put the burden on security to you but at least you would be in control of its privacy.

@Andreas_Sturm We could all start by supporting #FOSS developers first of all.

@midzer I'm saving some money right now by doing without MS office, Windows, Adobe software and AWS. Also, because Linux means that I need fewer resources and therefore less often a new computer. It is a matter of honour to donate part of it to the people and projects that make this possible.
