Toot

I sometimes wonder what part of the sounds I hear were analogue through the whole way from the source to my ear.

FM radio often isn't - as far as I know it's usually transmitted digitally from the studio to the transmitter tower. Mobile phones are digital, and I don't remember when I last saw a landline that wasn't an obvious VoIP underneath.

So... we're left with talking live to each other, some live performances (I guess not all) and maybe some personal radios. And nature sounds.

@sp6mr 🤯 never thought of that in detail. This will go through my head for quite some time now. Nice observation.

@sp6mr maybe amateur radio comms (though not HF as lots of HF radios are SDRs now)

@me Maybe PMR446 and CB radios as well. I don't know Baofeng's internals too good, but I wonder if the signal is quantized inside of it at any point.

@sp6mr FM radio was transmitted via air? Phones don't have radios anymore tho, that's one down.

@kohane

FM radio is still widely listened to in cars, so It's still not dead 😀 even though it is more and more often replaced by people listening to their music in cars via various means, the radios themselves are still broadcasting.

Though some countries are moving to digital radio.

@sp6mr I can't say I mourn the death of FM radio... or AM. I don't care about the news & I prefer selecting music on my own instead of taking the pre-selected stuff from a random DJ

@kohane The secret is to have some DJs you like and who you trust that what they'll select will be interesting and better than what the algorithm will pick for you 😁 but it's rarer and rarer in today's radio landscape, sadly, which moves into the approach of having automated song selection to fill the time between commercials. Unfortunately most radio stations, especially big ones, are like this nowadays.

@sp6mr

Eh... it's still a random stranger, I'd rather take a friend's recommendation.

I prefer choosing myself tho, specially in a bus/train ride.

My question abt radios was between digital radio and listening to podcasts or something like Spotify or Apple Music.

My ranking for listening:

My own playlists

Stuff that popped up in my mind

Suggestions

Stuff a friend insisted I should listen to

Algorithm (Apple is quite good here)

A random stranger in the street, pub or a club/group

A random stranger working as DJ

@sp6mr BTW, what's the difference between digital radio & listening to podcasts?

@kohane digital radio (eg. DAB) is still transmitted over the air, but instead of having the signal "encoded" using FM (Frequency Modulation) digital data is broadcasted with audio and potentially other data in it.

Something like difference between old, analogue TV and DVB-T we have nowadays almost everywhere. Technologically different, to an end-user it's an improvement because more channels can fit in, and some extra information like schedule can be added on the side.
