Today's hardware announcements look interesting, but man I really wish Apple would switch to an every-two-years schedule for phone upgrades.
Every year puts enormous pressure on the software engineers, and IMO it's starting to show. So many headline features now get pushed back to .1, .2 and .3 releases instead of .0. Shipping new hardware every year also feels really environmentally wasteful.

@davedelong But not everyone upgrades every year, so they're targeting different generations of customers. I went from 11 to 14 and skipped 15. I'll probably upgrade to a 16. But I understand about the software engineers having a tough time. I can never catch up with all the API changes in the OS's from year to year. Can't imagine the Apple engineers not only creating them, but also the other groups who have to use them in time.

@davedelong I feel like market competition forces all phone manufacturers into this unneccesary game of chicken. It'll take someone to break it, but no one wants to be first.

@davedelong I don’t know if the shareholders would like if Apple got a year off for fixing stuff, but users surely would.
It’s kinda weird that this eternal death march (going on 18 years) is completely self imposed. At this point I’m not sure who is asking for it.

@davedelong @mpospese used to be we’d get the “s” model which was a nice breathing space thing. Definitely feels like every year is a “major new thing. Best ever. Must buy this phone” release.

@davedelong this is part of why i left apple nearly 10 years ago. the annual cadence is incredibly damaging and limiting, and incentivizes flashy new features rather than bug fixes and stability.

@davedelong I wonder if more people would upgrade if their phones were updated every other year or on the random cadence that is Mac
