Toot

I like graphic novels.

I like to draw.

I think I'm at least okay at drawing, but I could be better.

I LOVE to create stories.

I think I can write good graphic novels. I'm confident on this.

I would like to do something with this love. I have a few stories I'd like to put out there.

My problem: I have no capacity to draw longer than 45 minutes a day. My drawing is also so inconsistent. Some days it feels as easy as breathing, some days I just can't.

What to do?

@Lily_and_frog Thumbnail/sketch one of your ideas, perhaps? That doesn't require as much time, but perhaps it can still give you the satisfaction of getting the story out in comic form. After sketching an entire comic, you'll probably be able to draw the recurring characters and other elements more consistently too, and you'll know if you feel like devoting the next years of your life to drawing it in full.

And if not, you'll have something very useful for a potential collaborator.

@eishiya

Yep, that's done. I got two Full stories, ~200 pages each. One about love and the Liverpool Blitz of WW2, another one about teenagers hijacking a spacecraft to find a wreck on a Trojan asteroid.

I really enjoyed the writing part. Building the characters, finding their motivations, intertwining the storylines, going back to add elements explaining better their decisions, killing characters

Get at drawing... I lose my wits! Heck, I started a character sheet and only shaded 1 properly!

@eishiya

The question is, how to find a collaborator when one has little money, no experience, but just a couple of ideas one has in their head!

@Lily_and_frog Indeed. Having a sketched comic can help since it more clearly communicates what you're going for, which can save an artist time (and you money), and can attract an artist better than just a pitch.

Still, the chances of finding a collaborator are pretty low, but that's all the more reason to sketch the comics yourself :D A rough and sketchy comic is at least a comic, rather than just an idea. It's also experience.

@Lily_and_frog "that's done": You mean you've already drawn the comics? Just to be clear: I meant thumbnail/sketch the whole thing as comic pages. After that it's all just polish xP

FWIW, I don't think fully shading comics is a great idea, especially if your time is limited. It often hurts readability rather than helping, which is why many comics have flat colouring or only simple shading. Not colouring at all is also an option, if the story meshes with a heavier inking style.
