Toot

[#]compost -ers, a question: I currently have a lot of ivy and brambles that I'm scared of putting in the compost lest after spreading the compost I find them coming up everywhere. As I know both of them are super invasive.

Would it be safe to let it all dry out thoroughly in the sun to kill it before adding to the compost, or better to take it to the dump or somewhere far from my garden?

@econads @BroadforkForVictory @compost should be fine to just let them dry out thoroughly then compost them, I've even done this with bindweed with no problems

@econads @BroadforkForVictory @compost only issue with composting brambles is the thorns take a long time to break down so you'll probably forget you put them in there and spike yourself a few times

@afewbugs

Like longer than the vines themselves? Is it worth maybe to cut them up after drying?

@econads @BroadforkForVictory @compost I chop them into short (10-20cm) bits with secateurs and mix them through the rest in my hotbin. But then you have a lot of little spiky sticks in the compost when you're just expecting non-spiky sticks

@afewbugs

Ah, I'm lacking a hot bin. Maybe I'm going to go for @BroadforkForVictory's thing with the dead hedge. Just need to find a place for it now.
