Should an open source project have a forum as well as a Discord? Thinking about mirroring Discord to Discourse so we can get some searchability for Leptos issues. #rust #webdev #rustlang

@benwis

If your only support/documentation is Discord, you have neither.

@negative12dollarbill Not documentation, we have a lovely book and rust docs. This is purely for community

@benwis Only a couple of years ago, I would've said "start and moderate your own subreddit" but now Reddit is poisoned, which makes me sad.

@benwis @negative12dollarbill I think one of the problems is that community discussion areas is where a lot of organic diagnostics and operational wisdom will get discussed. It takes extra dedicated effort to translate that back into documentation.

When the discussion area isn't easily searchable (and the gate of joining and managing another micro community server is a barrier, as is the quality of Discord's search) you end up with duplicate diagnostic effort from your users, and the masking of tiny issues that are solved through "community wisdom".

Disqus I don't think is a great solution, both for the searchability issue (people will almost always end up using one or the other fracturing an already small community) and as a technical Q&A platform but the latter is only my personal opinion.

@pasties @negative12dollarbill if I can make discord and discourse interoperate seamlessly than perhaps I can avoid that. It'll have to be an experiment

@benwis @pasties @negative12dollarbill

this sounds like something a lot of people would be interested in seeing

if you manage to pull this off i would be happy to read a technical writeup and share it with people

even if it's not seamless but a temporary measure to help people migrate from discord to discourse (or any self-hosted forum)

literally anything that opens up the way for communities to migrate away from that toxic platform is immensely valuable 👍

@benwis we have a discord server that has integration with matrix and answer overflow. It's a really nice way for us to have support forums that are publicly searchable

@gmpinder @benwis Is that setup documented in such a way that I could point operators of discord "servers" to those docs? That would be very helpful when asking projects to have publicly accessible venues.

@benwis I really don't like discord. Most of the time I try participating in an OpenSource project's discord, I just get overwhelmed and lost and then basically just keep ignoring it.

Add on top that discord constantly forces me to log in again, which means discord just ends up being a tab in my browser where I'm not logged in.

@benwis You're asking the wrong crowd. THIS crowd hates proprietary sinkholes like Discord.

HOWEVER. There is another crowd entirely who would vote very differently.

And I'd like to add something, if you'll forgive me, that wasn't an option.

"I don't care. Just ACTUALLY put time and effort into whichever you choose, because creating uninhabited ghost towns attached to projects is an anti-pattern".

@feoh @benwis That's a criticism of Discord, but I don't think it's the main one (certainly isn't for me).The problem is that chats aren't easily searchable. Newcomers won't be able to find information—they just have to ask questions they know have probably been answered fifty times and wait for responses. It's intimidating and inconvenient. That's as true on Matrix or Keybase as any closed-source solution.
