Ya know what? I'm gonna toot my own horn today On Here Specifically.
I have already received at least a dozen thankful comments/replies for letting people know they can slow down door closers. A lot of people have been living with irritating bangs in apartment buildings and whatnot.
And thanks to watching a YouTube video, their life is now better. I didn't sell anything to them, I just decided to share some knowledge in my own (hopefully entertaining) way.

So next time someone shares a YouTube video with you and you want to be a stick in the mud about that, remember that everyone has their own paths to knowledge and their own way to spread knowledge.
"this could have been an article"
Yeah it could be, and in fact it is! Anyone could look up door closers on Wikipedia and get the gist of my video's information.
But many millions of people don't even know they're called door closers. Hell, I didn't! Not until I needed to install one.

Now, people browsing YouTube looking for something to watch are getting a helpful video with a thumbnail and title that makes clear "this is a door closer, they are adjustable, I will show you how to slow them down" and they're going to learn a lot of cool shit if they click through.
That's why I do this. And please feel free to bookmark this thread in case you'd like to educate one of the loud YouTube/video haters for me.

@TechConnectify thank you sir; I always thought those things were either stop/go and weren’t adjustable

@TechConnectify
Some things just work better in video form.
For things outside my knowledge domain, having someone willing to step through how a thing works, with a sprinkling of interesting history, commentary, and analysis of why this particular thing is good or bad is a good use of my time.
Thanks for your time and effort in putting out your videos, I enjoy them.

@benji_w @TechConnectify yep, there's a reason people hate IKEA instructions even though they're objectively some of the best printed instructions to have ever existed. There are little indicators of success/failure (like, say, the object I'm looking at has much more rust/grime/dust than the one in the video) that simply can't be covered in any more abstract medium.

@TechConnectify Definitely appreciate your videos & the work that goes into them. Gotta say, the thing I hate is ppl linking videos as a response to something, usually in chat/forum/email, not the video or the production that went into it, just that the responder replying with the link to the video almost always gives no context about the video they are referencing; just a link with no explanation, not even a title. Auto link preview info helps, where such info is shown, but not all the methods of sharing a link to a video actually support it.
The anti "hey just click on this random link" person in me rebels in horror each time.

@cefiar @TechConnectify Ok cefiar, I won’t send you a video link like that, and please know that I’m never gonna let you down, never gonna run around or desert you either. ❤️

@TechConnectify This is how I find a lot of stuff I didn't know I wanted to know. Even - or especially - when I'm doing something else and it's just background noise, I can absorb the gist of a topic and if I want to know more I can either pay closer attention or look it up later. Or both if it's really fascinating!
Wikisurfing is also discovery, but it's a far more interactive route that requires active attention. I get that some people feel like YouTube is just sponsors and mindless hype content, but that's writing off an entire medium, like saying TV or radio are/were pointless because you could get just your news and entertainment in print.
It's fine to prefer a medium, that's why books and CDs still exist. However, as someone who used to eg. blindly hate Apple, all blind hate does is blind you to a thing's strengths and your own weaknesses. For me, it meant not knowing how to fix or set up Macs in my IT/computer repair jobs. To write off YouTube is to remove a means of discovery and passive learning.

@emilyyoung @TechConnectify nodds in agreement I think #YouTube will retain it's plave as a #VideoHosting site (cuz noone can compete with free), tho it's "social" media aspect will loose relevancy more over time as the removal of downvoting sadly benefits many scammers pushing malware...

@TechConnectify The information architecture embedded in this is truly joyous and that kind of care is why I love watching what you do. Thank you!

@TechConnectify 10 years younger me would've found this so useful as my flat had one on every door apart from the bathroom one, and I still found it interesting. I never knew what they were even called, or that you can adjust them. I think all of them could've done with sorting out. Pretty sure I thought you had to buy special doors with them attached as well.
So thank you for doing your videos, and the music at the end and the bloopers are always great.

@TechConnectify This was the article that convinced me that I was sleeping on the value of video and YouTube specifically. And in retrospect I can’t imagine how I ever thought I would rather try to learn how to adjust a door closer (or change a car tire, or do a judo throw, or any of a thousand other things I could learn on YouTube every day) by reading an article

@TechConnectify if you really want to confuse and mess with the haters you could unironically do a video on how electronic igniters work on gas stoves.

@bondolo Heh, funny you should mention this. I've written quite the gag intro for a related topic which I'll probably hammer out next.

@TechConnectify It was a great video, as usual Alec. In case you wanted to look into automatic doors in the future, my day job happens to be for one of the largest producers. Feel free to drop me a line if you're ever interested!

@vkc @TechConnectify I've firmly decided that the science of "how people find out about stuff" (and successfully affect human behavior) is less a science and more a papier-mache piecemeal that sorta mostly tends to kinda work sometimes.
After all, if it really was a science, the marketing industry would spend 100 billion dollars on it per year. Even they barely get it.
So yeah, we have to communicate things clearly, simply, repeatedly, in many different ways, to have any prayer of saturation.

@TechConnectify thank you for your entertaining and informative videos. I truly appreciate what you do, and I’m so glad you do it. And all for the low low price of $0. Sorry the mastodon hive mind can be… trying… but I’m hopeful that there’ll be a solution soon and you can be more comfortable engaging on Mastodon more.

@TechConnectify Yes! Such a great point about discovery there.
And especially when it comes to "things that people can do themself that they haven't realized they can do themself," a video does a much better job of showing that you can, in fact, do it yourself.
Things have a way of always sounding a little more technical when they are written down.

Reasons to have the Swing Speed fast:
It's the front door to my house and I don't want to have to wait to lock the door.
Yes it's a fire door. It's the GOD of fire doors that is also automatically secured by bolts at 6 positions.
I loved that door.
I don't live there anymore.
